IRS Announces 2019 Mileage Rates

Prior to each calendar year, the IRS announces mileage rates for business use of personally-owned vehicles, and certain other personal uses.

Last week, the IRS issued the 2019 optional standard mileage rates used to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile for business, charitable or medical purposes. Beginning January 1, 2019, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (including vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be:
  •  58 cents per mile driven for business use, up 3.5 cents from the 2018 rate;
  • 20 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes, up 2 cents from the 2018 rate;
  • 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations (no change from 2018).
Many employers adopt the IRS business rate (or some portion) for reimbursing employees who use their vehicles for company purposes. So HR and payroll specialists will need to modify their policies and record keeping to account for the increased rate starting after the New Year.
