IRS Offers Free Tax Return Options for Both Young and Old

VITA Tax ProgramThe Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is celebrating its 50th Anniversary, offering free tax help to people who generally make $56,000 or less.
VITA programs are staffed by IRS-certified volunteers, who provide free basic tax return preparation and electronic filing. In addition, AARP provides Tax-Aide, which is similar to VITA. You can use the following locator tools to find a site nearest you:
IRS Free FileThe IRS rolled out Free File for 2019 tax returns, a mobile-enabled tax return preparation service.
Most Free File users are expected to be under the age of 30 with gross incomes of less than $69,000. The product features free tax preparation, free electronic filing and free direct deposit for refunds.
Free file features 10 brand-name tax software providers who are in a partnership with the IRS to offer their online products for free. Each provider sets additional eligibility requirements, generally based on age, state residency and income.
Note to Parents: This is a great option for first-time tax filers, such as your college students away from home.
