Mueller & Associates, CPA Offers a Highly Successful Internship Program

In 2009, Mueller & Associates, CPA started an internship program at Front Range Community College for the 2008 tax season and is currently the only CPA firm offering an internship at FRCC.  Potential interns are first selected by the accounting faculty, narrowed down by the Business Department Chair, Lauren Smith and finally interviewed by Mueller & Associates, CPA.

The internship program at Mueller & Associates provides the student with the opportunity to prepare actual tax returns, work during a busy season under the supervision of a CPA and determine if public accounting  is the correct professional path  for him or her.  In addition to providing practical experience to the intern, Teresa and Paul both participate on the Business Department Advisory Committee and have assisted with many student-centered events on the FRCC campus, such as Career Day and Etiquette Lunch.

“This internship is a phenomenal opportunity for FRCC accounting students”,  says Lauren Smith, Business Department Chair and Accounting Faculty at FRCC.  “Most CPA firms recruit interns from university juniors and seniors.  For the past five years, the Muellers have given FRCC accounting students the opportunity to ‘test the waters’ while they are early enough in their program to decide on a future direction.”

“The students don’t just make copies and get coffee”, said Paul Mueller, the firm’s Managing Director.  “They are truly challenged in tax preparation and become a full member of our service team”.

As proof of the program’s success, one of the first interns had planned to attend FRCC for two years and transfer to CSU to pursue a degree and career in real estate.  Demonstrating a knack for accounting, Smith suggested he apply for the internship program.  His intern experience convinced him to obtain an accounting degree at CSU, which he completed at the end of 2013.  He was offered and accepted a full-time position at one of the Big Four accounting firms in Denver.

This year, Mueller & Associates is proud to welcome Kirsten Nelson and Christopher Gingery, both of whom are current students at Front Range Community College.

Paul Mueller - New NCEDC Board Chair

Paul Mueller elected 2014 Board Chair of the Northern Colorado Economic Development Corporation

Paul Mueller, Managing Director of Mueller & Associates CPA, is the newly elected Board Chair for 2014 of the Northern Colorado Economic Development Corporation (NCEDC).  He refers to this role as “living the dream”.

Mueller and his wife, Teresa, moved to Northern Colorado in 2008, during which they shared what each wanted to achieve in their adopted community.  Mueller’s desire was to be involved in economic development at a grassroots, transactional level.  He soon became involved in downtown revitalization efforts in Loveland, including the Rialto Theater Center and the Artspace Loveland Arts Campus.

His challenge as the new chair is to channel the collective talent and business acumen of the board members to position NCEDC as the Thought Leader in terms of economic development for Northern Colorado.  “Of any local institution, NCEDC has the most potential to positively impact the vibrancy and long-term viability of the Northern Colorado economy”, Mueller says, “This is exciting work and the sky is our only limit!”

One of the key action items for the Board this year is a focus on four key industries to identify opportunities to attract, retain and grow primary employers.  “We should not be shy”, he said, “about going to any employer around the country and ask, ‘Why in the world would you do business anywhere else than Northern Colorado?’”
