Scam Alert for Colorado Businesses

Watch Out for "Corporate Controllers Unit"

Over the past few days, Colorado businesses have been receving a very official looking form from the “Corporate Controllers Unit”. The form cites Colorado statutes about the requirement to file an Annual Report and goes on to describe penalties and sanctions for failure to do so. The bottom half of the form lists information requested of the business and informs the business to submit an “Annual Fee of $225?.

This is nothing more than an unscrupulous attempt by a shadowy organization to rip-off Colorado business owners. The annual report cited in the form can be prepared online through the Secretary of State’s website. Preparation time is no more than two minutes and the filing fee is only $10. In fact, you would spend more time filling out the CCU form, writing a check and mailing the misleading form than it would for you to do the online filing with the Secretary of State!

We received the notice in the mail yesterday and recognized it as a scam. Since that time, 3 of our clients have called who received the same form. Quite simply, THROW IT AWAY!

Be sure to call us whenever you receive a tax notice or a suspicious looking form that requests money and/or information. We need to watch out for each other!

Personal Property Tax Declarations for Businesses

In the past couple weeks, businesses have received a yellow postcard from the Larimer County Assessor's office concerning their 2014 Business Personal Property Declaration.  In the past, the Assessor sent out a lengthy yellow form to be completed and returned.

Over the past several years, the Assessor has been transitioning the Declaration to an online system at www.larimerassessor.org

You now have a choice of filing your Declaration in one of three ways:

  1. If you did not made any additions or deletions to your business personal property during 2013, you can fill out and mail back the yellow postcard.
  2. To report additions and deletions that occurred during 2013, you can make those changes online at the website shown above.  The yellow postcard contains certain information that you will need to login to your account.  At the website, click on the File Declaration link under the heading of Business Personal Property Records.
  3. If you want to use the yellow paper form, call the Assessor at 970.498.7069 to have the form mailed to you.

Annual Declarations must be submitted on or before April 15, 2014.
